What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are unhealthy relationships with food that usually develop in teenage years. These disorders are more common in girls and women, but are seeing an increase in transgender populations. These disorders coexist with other mental disorders such as depression, low self-esteem, fear and anxiety, and difficulty coping with emotions. Substance abuse is common as many people will use chemicals to manipulate hunger or weight loss.

Types of Eating Disorders

There are three main types of eating disorders recognized today.

  1. Anorexia Nervosa: Excessive weight loss and dieting, sometimes to the point of starvation.
